1 – CHILDREN ARE COSMIC BEINGS
“Home means being embedded in a larger whole.” ( Dieter Duhm). The highest principle is respectful care, and protection for the life of all beings on our planet Earth. Within every child and every young person there is a seed of compassion and humanity. Nurturing this is the most important goal of the Escola da Esperança, the School of Hope.
2 – “THE THINKING OF THE FUTURE MUST MAKE WARS IMPOSSIBLE.” (ALBERT EINSTEIN)
The foundation for a future peace-culture will be prepared in schools. “War is always a defeat for humanity” (Pope Francis) An understanding and knowledge of the diversity of human cultures is needed for multicultural communication and cooperation. The Escola da Esperança is open for children from the local region, and for children from every country on Earth.
3 – “HELPING HELPS” – CURRICULUMS SHOULD OFFER THAT WHICH IS NEEDED FOR A FUTURE WORTH LIVING
The Escola da Esperança aims to impart profound social, ecological, and technicall knowledge. This is the basis for the development of a global consciousness for the protection of our planet’s natural resources and for trust-based cohabitation with all that lives.
4 – ATTRACTION INSTEAD OF PRESSURE – LEARNING IS A NATURAL PROCESS, A PART OF LIFE THAT HAPPENS BY ITSELF
Given the conditions of trust and mutual respect learning follows the natural energy flows of life. Children and adolescents all have big questions: “Why doesn’t the moon fall out of the sky?”, “Why are there wars?” If they are allowed to ask these questions and find truthful answers, they will develop confidence and find their own motivation to learn – with great joy and competence.
5 – “I AM,” “I WANT TO,” “I CAN” – EACH INDIVIDUAL HAS HIS OR HER OWN INNER COURSE OF DEVELOPMENT
Children come into this world with different talents. The development of their individual potential requires educational surroundings in which these are recognised and supported. Each child follows his or her own innate developmental plan on an individual path of learning
6 – THE WORLD IS A HOLISTIC ORGANISM
The world cannot be divided into categories without us losing the sense of the whole. The same is true of the experiences of a child. All of the senses are involved in the combination of active research and cognitive understanding and through this learning is anchored in the cells and the ability to act is developed.
7 – “IN ORDER TO GIVE BIRTH TO A DANCING STAR ONE MUST CARRY CHAOS INSIDE ONESELF.” (FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE)
Creativity is the basis of every evolutionary process. It is the source of children’s play and free learning. In “creative fields” of interactive and mixed-age group learning spaces, life’s creative potential can unfold and is available to humanity for the shaping of our future.
8 – FREEDOM AND ORIENTATION REQUIRE EACH OTHER
Efficient and free learning takes place in the balance between orientation and freedom; between chaos and order; between routine and spontaneity. Meaningful boundaries and rules provide the protected space in which life can develop freely.
9 – FROM “I” TO “WE” – THE EXPERIENCE OF TRUST AND SOLIDARITY IN COMMUNITY
Children need to be embedded within a stable community to grow up healthily. A person who experiences trust from early childhood on within the family, within the children’s community and in school, will be an active co-creator of a humane “World Community”.
10 – TO SHAPE THE FUTURE, ONE MUST BE PREPARED FOR “LIFELONG LEARNING”
“It’s not only about changing the schools. It’s about changing life.” Accompanying children requires a willingness to change oneself. Schools can develop if the people in and around them are actively engaged in their own development and self-reflection. The schools of the future will continually develop on the basis of cooperation with each other and in response to new scientific insights.
